Navigating the South African urban landscape is, quite frankly, a daily exercise in hazard management. From the erratic movements of minibus taxis and the sudden appearance of deep potholes to the chaos of intersections during load-shedding, our roads are a volatile environment. For the motorcycle rider, these risks are magnified by the sheer urgency of modern traffic, and even more so, the mood swings of our fellow road users.
At the Motorcycle Safety Institute (MSI), we have always been committed to evolving alongside the needs of our riders. For years, our Advanced Rider Course (ARC) was the gold standard for high-level skill development. However, we faced a persistent challenge: finding suitable venues that offer enough space for practical, high-speed training while remaining affordable for riders like you and I.
To solve this, we’ve made a strategic shift!
We have merged the core life-saving elements of the ARC with our foundational Urban Rider Course (URC) to create the Urban Master Class (UMC). This is a remarkable upgrade from our standard URC and is designed for a seamless national roll-out, ensuring that world-class safety training is accessible to riders across the country.
What is the Urban Master Class?
The UMC is designed to bridge the gap between basic city riding and higher-speed survival. While the standard URC focuses on the fundamentals of town navigation, the Master Class introduces pressure and urgency. We have increased the training threshold to between 60 and 80 km/h, reflecting the actual speeds at which most urban commuter riders operate. Okay, I’m being modest!
Our aim is simple: to transform you from a “passenger” on your bike into a proactive operator who can anticipate and neutralise threats before they become crashes or collisions.
Who Should Attend?
The UMC is a specialised programme tailored for those who spend the most time on two wheels in high-density areas:
- The Daily Commuter: If you ride to work to beat the congestion, you know that the “60-80 zone” is where things usually go wrong.
- Delivery and Messenger Riders: With the massive growth in the delivery sector, riders are under immense pressure. We provide the skills to handle that pressure effectively.
- Professional Messengers: For those whose office is the saddle, high-level control is a professional necessity, not a luxury.
- Returning Riders: If you’ve been out of the saddle for a while and find today’s traffic more aggressive than you remember, this is your reset button.
Lowering the Risk: The Benefits of UMC
The difference between a “close call” and a hospital stay often comes down to muscle memory and technical knowledge. By training at higher urban speeds, we help you:
- Eliminate Panic Responses: By exploring maximum braking and hazard avoidance at 80 km/h in a controlled environment, you won’t freeze when it happens on the M4 or the N1.
- Master Machine Control: Understanding how to brake effectively and how to counter-steer correctly can mean the difference between hitting an obstacle and effortlessly gliding around it.
- Improve Spatial Awareness: We teach you how to make target fixation work for you, ensuring your eyes lead the bike to safety.
Course Outline at a Glance
The UMC covers a comprehensive range of high-stakes skills:
- Urban Speed Exercises: Precise control at 60 – 80 km/h.
- Controlled Stopping: Mastery over the machine during deceleration.
- Braking Dynamics: Expert application of Front and Rear brakes.
- Counter Steering: Mastering the “right way” for instant direction changes.
- Target Fixation: Visual techniques to navigate out of danger.
- Hazard Avoidance: Navigating obstacles at higher speeds.
- Stop-n-Go: Critical techniques to avoid being rear-ended in traffic.
- Corners & Turns: Speed and line selection, and emergency mid-corner procedures.
- Maximum Braking: Pushing the limits of your bike, with or without ABS.
